Flywheelone: The origin

The journey began in 1996 when Hans Berg posted his doctoral thesis "Effects of unloading on skeletal muscle mass and function in man" at the Department of Physiology,  Karolinska Institutet.
Within the decade he was one of the original founders of the flywheel exercise device (FWED) planned for use as an in-flight exercise system in response to long duration spaceflights. The FWED demonstrated its efficacy as a countermeasure device to prevent muscle atrophy, bone loss and impairment of muscle function in humans during simulated weightlessness and was tested by astronauts onboard the ISS in 2009 (photo courtesy of ESA).
